Description
This Peabody carbine is a breechloading, single shot, .50 caliber rimfire carbine made by the Providence Tool Company of Providence, Rhode Island. It is one of an estimated quantity of 112,000 carbines and rifles produced by the company which utilized a triggerguard that acts as a breech lever, lowering the breechblock for top loading of the round.
The carbine has a back action style lock and a large side hammer. It was developed during the Civil War years but the great majority of these carbines never saw action in the war other than by Rhode Island troops. This Peabody carbine is in near unfired mint condition and features a 20” round barrel secured to its black walnut stock via a single barrel band.
The stock is free of any blemishes and appears never to have been cleaned. The left side of receiver has the maker’s stamp “PEABODY’S PAT / JULY 22, 1862 / MANUF’D BY / PROVIDENCE TOOL CO / PROV R. I.” in small clear markings. It has a folding rear sight and a brass blade front sight on the barrel. The bore is rifled and is like new, just dusty, and would clean up to mirror bright. All metal carbine components are stamped with small inspector marks. All screws are flawless. This is an incredibly high grade Peabody carbine that is a fine collectible to add to any arms collection.
