Description
Patented in December, 1863 by Colonel W. D. Mann of Detroit, Michigan this cavalry accoutrement was designed to improve and replace earlier cavalry accoutrements. It was manufactured under contract by Emerson Gaylord of Chicopee, Massachusetts and is a very fine specimen of the US marked and inspected pistol cartridge box with the very rare original over the shoulder sling still intact. Surrounding the impressed “U.S.” is a deeply embossed, bordered oval ring with the stamping “COLONEL MANN’S PATENT REISSUED JUNE 7TH 1864 CARTRIDGE BOX E. GAYLORD MAKER CHICOPEE, MASS.” The box also has a wonderful original set of enlisted grade stamped brass cavalry insignia affixed to the front as shown.
