Description
This Civil War issued Mann’s Patent leather cartridge box is an original rifled musket or carbine ammunition pouch which is complete other than missing its unique inside finger-pull metal tin. The box, a variant Civil War ammunition holder, was part of a late War government contracted order for accoutrements. The Mann box was carried by many Federal soldiers during the latter part of the Civil War. Referred to as the Mann’s Patent box, it was introduced in December 1863 by Colonel W. D. Mann of Detroit, Michigan and was designed and improved to replace earlier cavalry specific accoutrements.
This box, made of high quality bridle grade leather, is in good to very good overall condition and is strong and smooth with just minor surface crazing and scuffing. In place of the earlier and rather heavy solder filled brass oval US box plate on the outer flap is an embossed “U.S.” emblem, bordered by an oval ring with the clear stamping , “COLONEL MANN’S PATENT REISSUED JUNE 7TH 1864 CARTRIDGE BOX E. GAYLORD MAKER CHICOPEE, MASS.”
This is a perfect field used example of a popular accoutrement carried during the American Civil War and would look great in ANY collection!
