Description
Very solid and inexpensive example of the standard cap of the Union Army during the American Civil War. The Model 1858 cap was called the forage or bummers cap by most soldiers in the field. This example is a standard contract pattern dating from 1861-1863 era. It is complete other than missing most of the sweat band as shown, and displays well. The original brown polished cotton lining is present. The original chin strap has a break as shown but can easily be repaired for display purposes. It is exactly as-found regarding condition and has never been cleaned, repaired or modified in any manner. The cap was originally sold in 1961 by a gentleman in New York to a collector in New Orleans, Louisiana. Great value on an original military piece of headgear from the Civil War era.
