Description
Very early dated Watertown Arsenal cartridge box for the M1855/63 type rifle muskets as well as the M1841 Mississippi Rifle, calibers .54 or .58. No tins present. This plate has a scarce M1839 type oval US plate affixed to the front as often seen issued to New York troops early in the War. It is important to note that soldiers in the field often removed the tins for faster access to ammunition in combat. Very few of these boxes have survived.
