Description
Fresh from an estate in New England, this is a wonderful grouping of Heber James Davis who was born in Hancock, New Hampshire and enlisted 4/26/1861 as a Private in Company E, 1st New Hampshire Infantry. He then served in another unit, rising in the ranks to 1st Lieutenant of Company K, I and B of the 7th New Hampshire Infantry.
The sword is absolutely stunning overall and is an Infantry officer pattern with the metal brass mounted, blued iron field scabbard (not leather). The sword is near fine with generous original frosting finish and no major flaws–but clearly shows some use in the field. The shagreen grip and wire are 100% intact and original and the original leather throat washer is present. The brass retains generous original gilt and the scabbard, over 70%+ original blue finish. There are no major dents present at all. Included with the sword is Davis’ original Commission certificate as well as three images of him (which match, by the way, the image posted on CivilWarData.com).
Davis had an outstanding service record and was twice wounded in battle–on May 14, 1864 at Drewry’s Bluff, Virginia and again October 27, 1864 on Darbytown Road, Virginia.
Copies of his service records are included. This is as fresh and well documented as original artifacts get!
