Very nice overall condition on this standard pattern Model 1850 Infantry Officer sword typical of production from 1859 to 1864. The shagreen (rayskin) grip is near perfect and all original wire wrap is present. Generous original gilt remains on the guard and mounts as shown and the Ames Manufacturing Company, Chicopee, Massachusetts, markings are clear on both the ricasso of the blade and the back of the upper scabbard mount. The blade is fully 3/4 etched and retains 85%+ original crisp frosted etching. The leather scabbard has some minor flaking but no breaks or bends. This pattern of sword was generally carried by infantry line officers under the rank of Major (mostly used by Lieutenants and Captains in the field). Nice, solid and honest example by the premier American sword maker of the 19th century and the Civil War years.
