RARE and wonderful set of original Civil War identified regulation US Army Quartermaster epaulettes in their original japanned tin case of Lt. John Platt of Missouri. His name is scratched in the top of the case as shown. This rare set of cased epaulettes is accompanied by Platt’s original hand signed Missouri commission as well as an original carte de visite image of Platt in uniform wearing the epaulettes! Platt was appointed in 1860 but did not receive his formal commission until January 11, 1861. He was appointed as Quartermaster of Engineer Corps, 1st Brigade, 1st District of Missouri Militia on the document. It is noted that he signed an Oath of Allegiance in 1865 which can be viewed online via the Missouri State Archives portal (Loyalty oath of John M. Also states that he is familiar with “the terms of the Third Section of the Second Article of the Constitution of the State of Missouri” and has adhered to its conditions for loyalty.
