Description
Solid example of an all matching Burnside percussion cavalry carbine serial number 33198. The Springfield Research Service database notes #33056 and #33200 issued to the 2nd Illinois Cavalry, so it is highly probable this example was in the same shipment. All mechanics function well, no parts are missing and the bore is very good to fine.
The Second Illinois Cavalry was organized at Camp Butler and mustered into service August 12, 1861, and with Company M, which joined the Regiment some months later, numbered 47 commissioned officers and 1,040 enlisted men. The regiment suffered 8 officers and 50 enlisted men who were killed in action or who died of their wounds and 3 officers and 173 enlisted men who died of disease, for a total of 234 fatalities. Most of their service was performed in Tennessee, Mississippi, Texas and Louisiana.
