Description
Very nice example of a first model carbine #10762 which fits neatly into the Springfield Research Service range of two known examples (#10152 and #11021) documented as issued to the 4th Tennessee Mounted Infantry (Union). The bore is strong and bright and all markings are crisp and legible. The mechanics are tight and functional and no replaced parts are evident. The spare nipple is NOT present inside the patchbox. There is a minor chip of wood missing behind the hammer as shown.
Organized at large in Tennessee September 1, 1864, the unit was stationed at Alexandria, Tenn., operating against guerrillas. Four companies were posted at La Fayette, Tenn., 4th Sub-District, Middle Tennessee in April, 1865. The unit saw battle action at Wall’s Hill September 28, 1864 and in Polk County November 23, 1864. The unit was constantly engaged against guerrillas in White, Overton, Fentress and Montgomery Counties and tasked with “quieting” the countryside until August, 25, 1865 when they were mustered out of service.
