Description
One of only 2,000 known to have been ordered by the US government (exact number delivered is unknown) and the only known example which retains the original iron scabbard. The carved walnut grip is near excellent and the metal parts appear to have been cleaned many decades ago. This sword was once in the noted collection of Harold Peterson, author of “The American Sword” and also that of Bill Guthmann. The Rose pattern closely copied the Starr contract sword of 1798 which was the first sword made under contract to the new American government following the Revolutionary War. It is clearly and deeply stamped “W.Rose & Sons” on the spine of the blade.
