Description

Truly a beautiful example of the most handsome of all patterns of American Civil War swords, this exceptional piece is fresh from a New England estate sale. The grip retains 100% of the original shagreen covering and wire wrap and the blade retains 95% original frosting and etching. It is elaborately embellished with patriotic motifs overall, reflecting the very high quality of the sword for the era. Even the brass mounts are hand engraved with beautiful motifs. The original blued steel scabbard is likewise near fine overall. This would be a difficult example to upgrade from.

The Model 1850 Staff and Field sword was prescribed by regulation by use for officers above the rank of Captain but were also carried by lower ranking officers who held staff positions, such as Quartermasters. There are no visible maker marks, typical for jeweler sold examples who used both American made pieces as well as blades imported from Solingen, Germany during the War. Museum and investment grade.

Although technically a Union sword, as they were produced starting in 1850 several prominent Confederate Officers carried identical patterns including the likes of Gen. Thomas STONEWALL Jackson!
