Description
This hand engraved and chased presentation sword was presented to J.R. Walker of the 45th Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteer Militia while on duty at New Bern, North Carolina in 1862.
This sword is a custom embellished Model 1840 NCO sword with a 32 1/2 inch straight blade with frosted patriotic and martial etching and a the Clauberg maker’s mark on the left ricasso. The hilt has elaborate floral engraving and does not have a langet on the left side. The enameled black leather scabbard has floral engraved brass fittings and is inscribed “J.R. Walker./45 Reg M.V.M./from his/fellow clerks/Oct. 1862.” James R. Walker is listed in records as First Sergeant of Company K of the 45th Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Militia. He was 19 when he enlisted on Sept. 30, 1862, and mustered in on Oct. 7. He mustered out of service at New Bern, NC, July 7, 1863.
This is a totally unique sword clearly heavily embellished by a jeweler. The sword exhibits a very fine bright blade with distinct etching and frosting and very isolated minor discoloration, light aged patina on the fine hilt, distinct engraving on the hilt and scabbard fittings, and some minor bends and flaking on the leather scabbard which shows scattered early and very minor repairs.
