Description
Here’s a really FRESH one, just purchased directly out of the family estate in Mississippi. The D-Guard is a Mississippi-Alabama style with an awl type grip and deep brown patina overall, just as it came from a family cedar trunk. The knife is attributed to Thomas J. Roach who served in Company K, 11th Mississippi beginning in 1861. A copy of his 1861-1863 diary is included (the family wanted to keep the original) as well as service records and a hand written provenance letter regarding the knife. The 11th was a HEAVY FIGHTING Army of Northern Virginia combat unit who fought in many battles including 1st Manassas, 7 Pines, Mechanicsville, Gaines Mill, Malvern Hill, 2nd Manassas, South Mountain, Antietam, Gettysburg, Bristoe Station, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Globe Tavern and Boyton Plank Road (Richmond).
Their first command was under Gen. Bernard Bee, the man attributed to giving Gen. Thomas Jackson the nickname “Stonewall.”
