Description

EXCEPTIONAL American Revolutionary War officer grade pistol, 100% original and silver mounted. This fine pistol features a 6.5″ .58 caliber octagon to round barrel with silver front sight. The breech exhibits fine a punchwork floral decoration and the flat double bridle lock with stepped tail features an engraved panoply of arms. It is beautifully engraved “Cde Coignet” below the pan. The cock and steel was made with fancy foliate engraving and the inside of the lock plate os stamped “JARED”. The beautiful walnut stock has carved plateaus around the breech plug tang, lock mortice, side plate, and trigger guard with heavily detailed raised foliate carving around the breech plug area and behind the entry pipe. The iron furniture includes a butt cap with long ears and sunburst engraved cap, a trigger guard with sculpted finial and engraved panoply of arms on the bow, a side plate with engraved panoply of arms, barrel shaped rammer and entry pipes and it retains the original wood rammer.

This is an extremly fine weapon manufactured circa 1755-1770 and is typical of high quality French weapons imported to areas like Boston and Baltimore prior to the outbreak of hostilities.

The only real flaw is a very old age crack in the lower grip, as shown, which does not affect either the function or overall appearance. This is simply a fine example of a master gunsmith creation from the years prior to the end of the American revolution. The weapon surfaced in an estate in New England where it had resided for at least 250+ years!
