Description

One of a few hundred  estimated to have been fashioned in this manner, this M1861 “Special” rifle musket by Colt (dated 1862 on the lock and 1863 on the barrel) is a two band variation of the more common three band weapon.  Made with a steel barrel, these weapons were extremely durable and accurate.  Originally purchased from an old collection and sold by Shiloh Relics in Tennessee, this weapon grades about a strong 7+ on a 10 scale.  All markings are clear and legible, the bore is very strong and the inspector cartouches are visible in the stock.  Only the fourth like this we have noted in over 35+ years in the collector market.

Close to 100,000 of the M1861 “Special” rifle muskets were manufactured from 1861-1865.  M1861 Special muskets were also made by other manufacturers including Amoskeag Mfg. Co., Lamson, Goodnow & Yale Co., and E.G. Lamson & Company.
