Description

Fresh find from  a ranch near Kendalia, Texas (north of San Antonio) where it was found in a collapsed log and rock shelter.  The blade is highly oxidized from age but the oak grip is complete—the nicest part, you can see how the iron oxidized into the wood, certifying the grip is original to the blade.  The forward quillion is fashioned like a snake head serpent, a trait common on antebellum Texas made knives.  There is a deeply struck makers mark on the ricasso of “J (star) K”.  It is unknown who the maker was, but several examples are known and all are made in the same basic manner, just with different blade lengths.
