Description
Another really tough gem to find these days, this 2nd year of Civil War production just popped out of an estate in Illinois and is EXACTLY as it has been since found in the attic of an old home near Taylorville, not that far from Springfield (about 30 miles). It must have been in the attic for many decades to have this look—it is 100% untouched in every respect and is even complete with the original US marked socket bayonet and scabbard.
All markings are clear, just obscured by many decades of time. The weapon shows honest field use overall but is devoid of any major cracks, chips or breaks. The only thing not entirely correct is the ramrod, which is commonly found on either a Confederate Richmond Rifle musket or some early Model 1863 Springfields, but this one absolutely was used with this weapon as the age patina matches perfectly.
If you want an incredibly HONEST example of a weapon that saw service in most all of the Civil War, you won’t find a nicer one. It has never been cleaned or enhanced in any manner and is absolutely a beauty to behold—and the centerpiece of any Civil War collection.
