Very solid example of the standard issue enlisted pattern Model 1860 Light Cavalry sword with original scabbard. Original leather grip and wire wrap. Clear and crisp maker marks and date and inspector initials. This sword exhibits a wonderful original unmolested brown age patina and overall is a very solid original example of the sabre carried into battle by Union mounted forces.
Ames Manufacturing of Chicopee, Massachusetts, was the most prolific sword maker of the era and known for high quality. The tag indicates the sword was owned/carried by Louis Maclane Hamilton and that he was “Killed by Indians.” Research shows there was indeed a US cavalryman by that name who was killed by Indians, but far more digging will have to be done to determine if this indeed was his sword—the tag appears to be from the 1950s era and the sword turned up at an antique show in Massachusetts several years ago. Another one worthy of some advanced research!
