US Model 1816 miltary musket by Springfield dated 1839

Description

This is a very nice and solid example of a typical early Civil War weapon as used by the North and South, as they were present in both arsenals.  Chambered in .69, it is a smoothbore weapon that never had a rear sight.  In the late 1850s it was altered at an arsenal from flintlock to percussion and reissued.  This weapon very likely saw service in the Mexican and Civil Wars.  It retains the original ramrod and is fully functional.  Metal and wood is very mellow and smooth, indicating no modification or cleaning of any kind in many decades.  This is a key weapon in the evolution of infantry weapons used by the American military in both war and peace.
