Description
The immediate predecessor to the US M1840 Heavy Cavalry sword, this Ames Dragoon sabre is in excellent overall condition and both the maker name, date, and “United States” is fully visible on the blade. The grip leather is all present but a small section of the original wire wrap is missing as shown. These swords are far more difficult to locate than most other patterns and saw extensive use in both the Mexican and Civil Wars. Many were in Southern arsenals at the outbreak of the Civil War.
