Description
This is a classic example of private purchase swords worn primarily by sergeants prior to the Civil War, North and South. This example was found in an estate near Greer, South Carolina and said to have been used by a Confederate officer—but there is no solid documentation to back the claim up. The grip is faux ivory (carved bone) and the original scabbard is all there, but broken as shown. This is a basic cornerstone of edged weapons carried during the Civil War. No maker mark is present.
