Description
This is a very solid example of the Union carbine rated one of the best of the era. Overall, it has a deep blue brown age patina and all markings are crisp and clear, as is the action. Over 900 in this range were issued to the 6th Illinois from early 1863 to mid 1864, according to Springfield Research Service records.
The carbine is missing the saddle bar assembly but they were often removed in the field as they got tangled in the ring retainers by units who did not receive slings for them.
The unit most notably served in operations against Vicksburg [Central Mississippi Campaign, Grierson’s Raid], Port Hudson, Franklin, and the Nashville battles.
