Description
This fantastic original 1862 issue “shoddy” frock coat was worn by Pvt. Wilfred Barker of Company G, 18th New Hampshire Volunteers. Barker is listed as killed of wounds received at Ft. Stedman, Petersburg, Virginia April 2, 1865.
The frock coat is an enlisted example which was found in the attic of the family home and suffered from insect damage as well as typical field wear. The staining on the top, which looks like fading, is believed to be from oxidized blood. All buttons are original to the coat. It could use a quality restoration as only back patching was done to it at some point in time.
This coat, according to provided documentation, was sold by noted New England collector Timothy Weider to the well known Civil War dealer Rick Burton and then to Homer “Mac” Cole of Virginia (deceased). The original regimental history book as noted is included. This frock sold for $7,000 at the peak of the market in the 1990s so here is an opportunity to get a really rare identified KIA enlisted coat for a fraction of the old selling price.
