Description
Right out of the woodwork and NEVER been outside the old 170+ year old house attic in Mobile where it was found just weeks ago concealed behind an attic access door! The date appears to be 1862 and the Ames marking is weak but legible. The rare fully copper riveted scabbard is complete with the ultra rare leather end tip which is hardly EVER seen on these early examples. At some point in time from when it was found until I managed to purchase it, some amateur decided to try to clean or sharpen the blade a bit–all easily buffed out, but they should have left it as found.
This is one of those that I wish could talk! The grip is original as well, with the leather being slightly sealed with naval tar! The ship rack numbers are crisply stamped and visible as well–with research, you might just find the ship it was assigned to!
Fresh, fresh, fresh cutlass!
