Description

Interesting old weapon that just popped out of an estate sale in Kentucky.  It is a well used Model 1842 iron mounted .69 smoothbore musket with a very well-worn overall appearance showing a LOT of use.

The lockplate is stamped and lightly visible with the Palmetto Armory motif and Columbia, SC and is dated 1852.  No barrel proof marks are visible.  The right side of the stock has a carved six-pointed star and the left has the name “J. T. Oram” carved in.

A brief search of records show several soldiers, both North and South, with the surname “Oram” but none have the exactly matching first initials.  There are two listed as “J” with no middle initial, both Southern, but neither from South Carolina.  An old gem worthy of much more research and bargain priced!
