This is a silver one half reale coin as recovered by a Civil War relic hunter in Fredericksburg, Virginia. These Spanish minted silver coins were the common currency in the United States from pre-Revolutionary War times well into the late 19th century. Very historical item which easily could have still been in circulation during the Civil War. In fact, it is known that Confederate forces were often paid in silver reales during the entire Civil War!
