Description

Fresh out of a premiere old collection, this is a beautiful example of the sword belt plate used by Marylanders that were manufactured prior to the Civil War by Emerson Gaylord of Massachusetts.  Only a few score are known to still exist today.  This plate clearly came from a dig but unfortunately the location was not noted in the collection notes.

Known by collectors as Kerksis #86, this plate measures approximately 2×3.7″ and weighs about three ounces.  It is classified by Kerksis as a rarity of 7 on a 10 scale.  At some point, perhaps in battle, the tongue part broke off in the field which likely was the cause of it being lost!  The face of the plate is incredibly detailed and crisp and shows little evidence of oxidation showing it was an early recovery.
