Description
This dagger was purchased in eastern NC and is a direct veteran bring back from Italy in 1945. It is an early model 1933 Sturmabteilung Dienstdolch as manufactured by Josef Münch of Brotterrode. The blade on this one shows heavy field wear and use but the acid etched “Alles für Deutschland” motto and “Josef Münch Brotterrode” maker mark are both very clear. The fit remains nice and tight and the tip must have been broken at some point as shown in the images provided. The steel based anodized scabbard has a black finish generally associated with motorcycle units. The scabbard body has minor dents and dings overall. The solid nickel scabbard fittings are excellent but at some point in time, the upper guard pommel was neatly sawn or filed off—I have seen this before, but honestly have no clue why it was done. The reverse of the lower crossguard is marked “Fr” – (Franken). This one rates a 6 out of 10 for rarity on McSaar’s SA rarity rating and truly I believe it’s rarer than that as this is only the third one we have ever seen by that maker. Bargain priced.
