Description
Fine overall example of the standard issue weapon to US infantry enlisted soldiers during the American Civil War. Manufactured identically to those at the Springfield Armory in Massachusetts, this is a beauty to behold–bright metal, crisp action, strong bore–it has it ALL.
This Model 1861, .58 caliber, percussion rifle-musket, dated 1862, is in complete, fine condition. Produced at the Alfred Jenks & Co facility in Bridesburg, PA. The 40” long barrel exhibits just a few scattered areas of very light pitting, mostly near breech.
Barrel, lockplate, C-shaped hammer, butt plate, bands, trigger guard, rear sight, and ramrod all wear the same mottled, tarnished silver look. Lock plate is stamped “U. S. / BRIDESBURG” in front of the hammer and strongly stamped “1862” behind hammer. A sharp and detailed spread-winged eagle motif is stamped on lockplate between hammer and bolster. Only the second year of manufacture for the model. This is a primary weapon of any Civil War collection and a keeper!
