Description

Nice honest example as found in a local estate of a WW2 veteran.  This example, made by Utica Cutlery, was issued with not only the M1 Garand rifle but on some M1903 and M1903A1 rifles.  The original bayonets are much longer and, in the field, cumbersome–so the government had them cut down to a more useful length.

Most of the Garands used on D-Day were “shorties” and designated as the US Model 1942 pattern.

The M1 Garand rifle was first issued with M1905 16″ bayonet. In 1942, the U.S. Military determined that a shorter bayonet was more useful. Existing stocks of M1905 bayonets were cut down to 10″. In addition, new manufacture 10″ bayonets were also produced. Cut-off-bayonets have a fuller that extends to the point and new manufacture has fullers that stop about 3″ from the point so you can easily tell them apart.
