Description

CG9. This is a bonafide example of the only pattern of “hard hat” actually used in the Civil War other than the pre-War M1855 types.  The ones you see with color painted devices on the front are actually post-War examples as the wartime issues were plain.  Only a few states ended up using these, mainly Pennsylvania and New York, as they were burdensome in the field when compared to the M1855 Forage cap.  This is a solid example showing honest age use and wear.
