Description

This fine item is FRESH from the family of the original owner, Charles Duell Lippincott, who had an incredible record of service during the American Civil War.  It is a hybrid form of officer sword manufactured to resemble a Model 1840/1860 Cavalry Officer pattern and was imported by Horstmann from Solingen, Germany, circa 1862-1863.  The blade is beautifully etched and the overall condition is totally unmolested.  You can see from the drag of the scabbard that the sword was carried in the field a great deal.  The guard is of a cavalry form with laurel leaves which match the decoration on the pommel cap.  The sword grip retains the original shagreen (shark or rayskin) grip covering and the original wire wrap.  The original leather throat washer is also intact.  According to family lore, the sword was damaged when a shell exploded nearby Lippincott at Gettysburg, causing him to fall on it and thus bending the brass guard slightly.  The damage is evident when you look at the guard from a direct angle.  Here is a synopsis of his service record, which includes combat action at the Battles of Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Bristoe Station, Mine Run, Wilderness, Spottsylvania Court House (BLOODY ANGLE), Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Sailors Creek–and right up to the Appomattox Surrender!  A stellar record, a fine sword, and an incredible Civil War military unit!  The image of Lippincott posted was found online and a printed out copy will be included with his service information.
