Description
Nice and well used example of the Starr Arms single action .44 percussion revolver as produced in Yonkers, New York, under direct US Army contract. The revolver is all matching and functions well (with a slight bit of cylinder wobble). All markings are crisp and clear and no parts have been replaced or modified.
The serial number is 39861 and there are no visible inspector marks in the grips, which is NOT uncommon for a Single Action Starr–it has many sub-inspector marks all over the frame and cylinder, however, and virtually all of this series was purchased under military contract. Based on information in the Springfield Research Service Database, the weapon was likely issued to a member of the 6th Michigan Cavalry.
The 6th Michigan Cavalry Regiment lost 7 officers and 128 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded and 251 enlisted men by disease during the Civil War.
The regiment, along with the other regiments of the Wolverine Brigade, is honored by a monument at Gettysburg. From the monument:
“Total enrollment 1624 Officers and men. Killed, 7 officers 35 men. Died of Wounds 18 men. Died of disease, 266 men. Total casualties 386. Participated in 56 skirmishes and general engagements from Hanover, Pa. June 30, 1863 to Appomattox, Va., April 9, 1865.”
