Very nice Smith percussion cavalry carbine with early production serial number. One of approximately 30,000 manufactured. This weapon is a .50 caliber and was extremely popular with cavalry forces and known to be reliable and accurate. Some were issued to artillery troops as well. This weapon is very tight overall with clear markings and has a previous owners initials carved in the right buttstock. It is missing the sling ring or perhaps never had one. Very strong bore.
This weapon falls within the documented range of weapons issued to 11th Illinois Cavalry according to Springfield Research Service.
