Description
This is an unusual example of the standard weapon of Union cavalry during the American Civil War. Perfect in proportions and finish, the barrel length is 1″ shorter than the typical revolver and the modification or production appears to be from the Colt factory. Mechanically this weapon functions flawlessly and the overall finish is immaculate! All markings are crisp and clear and all numbers are matching. The cylinder scene is incredible!
The serial number is all matching and #141118, indicating manufacture by Colt early in 1863 and it is also in the range noted by Springfield Research Service of known Colt M1860 Army .44 revolvers issued to the 6th New York Cavalry. The regiment was also known as the “2nd Ira Harris Guard” and lost 9 officers and 72 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded and 133 enlisted men to disease during the Civil War. The cavalry regiment was present and actively involved in scores of major engagements during the Civil War and is honored by a monument at Gettysburg, too.
This weapon may have been custom ordered from Colt or modified for the specific wants of an officer–impossible to tell, as no records exist on the pattern which would provide those details.
