One of approximately 2,000 produced in 1864, this fine example is serial number 23,383 and is in the known range issued to the 37th and 57th Massachusetts Infantry. The rifle is in flawless mechanical condition overall and all markings are crisp and clear–the action functions perfectly! I don’t think I have ever seen more than one that still has the original leather sling still present–which is in fine condition–and another rarity, the original barrel tompion is still there! (The tompion is a wooden plug used to keep moisture and dirt out of the muzzle.)
The rifle has a fine bore and the original magazine tube is present, as is the rear sight. If you are seeking a VERY clean and honest example of this famous and low production weapon WITH a solid unit association, here you go!
