Description
This rare beauty won’t have many close matches for condition out there, no doubt. On a scale of 10 it is a 10!
This US Model 1841 Rifle aka “Mississippi” is #432 of 10,411 examples altered by Colt for the US Government and delivered on Feb. 12, 1862 for use in the field of valor.
Originally chambered in .54, this one was altered by Colt to the new standard caliber of .58 but they did not change the original brass tipped ramrod. The bore and government inspector cartouches are so crisp you can FEEL them easily and this stunning weapon retains almost ALL of the arsenal brown finish. In over 48 years in this trade I have never seen a finer example anywhere—and that includes collections like those of the Smithsonian and Cody Firearms Museum.
Originally manufactured in 1850 by Robbins and Lawrence of Windsor, Vermont it was one selected by the US Government to be modified for Civil War use.
If you want the absolute BEST, you have found it.
The only drawback is that it is missing the Colt adaptor for the sword bayonet which was often discarded in the field due to the cumbersome nature of the long blade. The rear sight is of the type used on Colt Revolving rifles and unique to these two full military grade weapons.
