Description
This is a very honest overall example of the standard infantry officer sword of the Civil War. It surfaced in a yard sale in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania with the story as being found in the attic tucked behind several boxes of books from the early 1900s era–no other history. It is a bit unusual in that the scabbard is top sewn, not center sewn as most are–at first glance it looks like a Confederate Boyle and Gamble scabbard, but they have pinned mounts and these have screws.
The blade is fully 3/4 etched and in outstanding overall condition. Likewise, the shagreen wire wrapped grip is near perfect and overall, this sword is about as untouched as you will ever find! There is no visible maker mark but the style of the lettering resembles examples made by Christopher Roby of Chelmsford, Massachusetts. It is known that Roby wholesaled swords to sutlers and jewelers and this may well be one of those.
The sword is very well made with a tight hilt and unbroken brass mounted leather scabbard. It is a perfect fit in ANY edged weapon collection!
