Description

This is a very nice original condition US issued cartridge box for infantry troops likely issued in 1861 or 1862.  It has a reproduction sling put on by a re-enactor with eagle breast plate (which appears to be original) as well as the original oval US plate on the outer flap.  It was manufactured by R. Nece of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania who had a contract issued in April, 1861 for 1,000 such boxes for the State of Pennsylvania–and this is likely one of them.  This example is about as nice as field used gear gets overall and as honest as they come–museum and investment grade overall.
