Description

Found in a local estate sale, this fine old military helmet is clearly marked with hkp62, meaning it was manufactured by Sächsische Emaillier und Stanzwerke A.G. in size 62.  It is also marked with the lot number, often called the serial number, of 982.

It is a single decal type with what is called the Kriegsmarine pattern  decal due to the gold tint, but often the silver fades to that color over time.   Its original factory finish shows heavy field and combat use. The  left side is adorned with a single decal with no evidence of the National Colors decal on the right.

Around March of 1940, an order from German high command directed  the omission of National Colors decals from all helmets due to the bright appearance in the field. The helmet’s interior brim is maker and size stamped hpk62 along with the lot number of 982.

The lining has been removed but the original attaching pins and washers remain intact.  The family story says the US GI who brought it home used the helmet to hold water in when he shaved!

Factory camouflage German Heer (Army) helmets are far more scarce than other patterns.
