One of the more difficult to find Civil War era revolvers, this is a fine example of the Colt Model 1849 Pocket Model of Navy caliber. Identical to it’s pattern gun, the M1849 Pocket in .31 caliber, this big brother is quickly recognized by the rebated cylinder as used with the M1860 Colt Army .44 revolver. Chambered in .36 like the Model 1851 Navy series, this was a little powerhouse–basically the .357 Magnum of its time!
The rebated cylinder features a rolled stagecoach robbery scene like the standard Pocket Model and if you couldn’t see the bore or the cylinder, you would think it was just another Pocket Model. Very few of these handguns were ever produced as compared to the standard M1849 and this one is a first year production example as manufactured in 1861–right at the beginning of the Civil War.
These guns are rarely present even in advanced percussion handgun collections due to their very low production–don’t miss it! All markings are crisp and clear, all numbers match and the action is strong and tight. The cylinder scene is 90%+ which in itself is a rarity with these handguns. This is a KEEPER all the way.
