US Civil War M1864 cartridge box with original sling and eagle breastplate



Made for the .58 rifle musket, these boxes began production in 1863 are are called the M1864 in most circles.  No tins are present and there is an old field repair to the sling as shown.  It is important to note that soldiers in the field often removed the tins for faster access to ammunition in combat.
