Description
Regulation pattern US Model 1840 Marine Corps sword, almost identical to a US M1840 Non-Commissioned Officer pattern but with a much wider blade and manufactured with one kidney guard side folded over. The swords were specified for Marines but Horstmann and Company of Philadelphia over-estimated the contract and many ended up being sold as surplus as “band” swords–and this example has been nickel plated, indicating either band or Grand Army of the Republic use. A scarce pattern. Scabbard tip is detatched as shown.
