Description
Exceptionally nice Cabotville, Massachusetts marked sword with a bright, sharp blade and fully original grip leather and wire wrap. At some point likely in the 20th century somebody decided to camoflage the scabbard for snow use, I guess…but easily removed (enamel). This is a super honest antebellum sword produced right after the Mexican War ended and before the Civil War started. It retains the original leather throat washer and the scabbard doesn’t have a throat washer, as the guard for these early swords were recessed, helping waterproof the blade. The tip is a tiny bit tweaked but still perfectly pointed, as shown. I discounted this one a bit so you could buy some aircraft paint stripper!
By the way, the large tack holding the wire wrap is absolutely correct for this pattern, as is the lack of a scabbard throat.
