Description

This is a beautiful example of the imported grade P53 sabre complete with a near perfect checkered, pressed leather grip and fine scabbard.  The blade is bright, strong and has no nicks in the cutting edge—and the tip is perfect.  The blade is proof marked and also stamped with a drawn bow & arrow and the letters B M within the bow, indicating the blade was made by the Bleckman company of Solingen, Prussia. J.E. Bleckman maintained a sales agent in London from 1858 through 1870 and also supplied a number of swords to northern and southern makers and dealers during the American Civil War.

While not as valuable as those marked with the Georgia “G” or Courtney and Tennant marks, the Bleckman swords are known to have been purchased by Southern agents in 1861 and 1862. This example also has roman numerals engraved near the top of the scabbard as shown.
