Description
This incredible edged weapon is an American made field sword comprised of parts of an English/Scottish mid-18th century basket hilt back sword. The pommel and blade are from the broadsword but the guard, a simple sheet iron type, and horn grip are pure AMERICAN!
The blade is a single fullered, single-edged blade (double-edged towards to the spear-point tip) and stamped on each side with a crowned ‘GR’ cypher and ‘DRURY.’ Drury manufactured mostly highlander basket hilt back swords from the 1720s until the 1780s era and the cypher is that of English King George I. George I was King from 1 August 1714 until 11 June 1727 so the dates fit in perfectly for the American Revolution!
This rare sword was discovered in a private collection in Houston, Texas, where it had resided since the 1920s. Unfortunately, it is not known where it originally was found.
There is absolutely NO DOUBT that this is an American “make do” weapon for infantry and very likely it was used by a lower ranking officer in the Continental Army. If only this one could talk!
