Description
This is a very exceptional Civil War rifled musket dated 1864 on the breech and lockplate as manufactured under US Government contract by William Muir of Windsor Locks, Connecticut.
This fine weapon is one of 30,000 produced in 1863 and 1864 and specifically issued to both US Army and US Marine Corps infantry units. The Muir contract was generally shipped to the US Marine Corps in 1864 almost exclusively. While virtually all of these weapons are pattern 1861 in form, a few hundred are known from 1864 that were manufactured in the style of the Model 1863 Type II configuration, as this one is. The bore is near excellent and all parts are original to the period of use. The metal is overall near arsenal bright and the mechanical function is flawless.
