Description
This is a standard production US M1840 Musician sword and scabbard as produced by the premier maker of the era, Ames Manufacturing of Chicopee, Massachusetts. It is crisply maker marked and dated and inspected 1864. Rather than the standard brass throg stud mounts, this has SILVER engraved fancy Masonic ring mounts placed for a left handed user! I’ve honestly never seen another remotely like this, but the form and fit is perfect. There is nothing in US regulations which don’t allow Masonic items to be used in the field, so I guess the owner wanted to show his brotherhood off. It IS known that members of the Masonic order treated their fellow fraternal associates with mutual respect on BOTH sides, North and South–so perhaps this guy wanted an edge! Very unusual and likely unique Civil War weapon!
