Description

This nice Winchester is also known as the Second Model and is stocked with a schutzen style buttplate which is original to the weapon.  From the serial number, it was manufactured late in 1869.

The Winchester Model 1866 Musket was the first lever-action musket made by Winchester, featuring a longer barrel (27 inches), magazine, and fore-end than the rifle and carbine variants, distinguishing it by its size rather than being a true musket. Nicknamed the “Yellow Boy” for its brass receiver, it was chambered in .44 caliber Henry rimfire and offered exceptional firepower for its time with a 17-round magazine capacity.

This particular long gun surfaced in western Louisiana with a verbal history of having been carried west in the early 1870s.  Along with the other M1866 series, these weapons were the descendants of the famed Henry Rifle used during the Civil War.
